English Language Learners at Lincoln Middle School and Lincoln High School receive supports that match their language proficiency levels and language needs. Students have one to four "support blocks," in which an ELL teacher is present in their academic classes. This way, they do not miss core instruction time and they have specialized support within the classroom.
Newcomers and Recent Arrivals: Students that come from other countries speaking little English have a variety of supports. Newcomer students and immigrants usually have four academic supported classes, or more if needed. An ELL teacher helps guide and facilitate their transition into U.S. schools, including assistance with getting around the school, lunches, and other routines. Technology such as iPads and tablets are provided for greater ease of translation. The ELL teacher, Ms. Pringle, works with content area teachers to translate materials and provide modified assignments and other language support until students are ready to transition into having most of their instruction and assessments in English. We have had newcomer students from Central America, Mexico, and Africa in recent years.
Exchange Students: Lincoln Schools hosts exchange students from many countries, such as Japan, China, Germany, and Russia. Our exchange students are part of our language program and receive language services according to their language and cultural needs.
Intermediate and Higher Proficiency Students: Students with higher levels of English proficiency receive one to three support blocks in areas of academic and language need. Students are supported as they attain the vocabulary, literacy, and comprehension skills that they need in order to be successful in English, History, Math, Science, and all of their academic subjects. Many of our students are on the Honor Roll, involved in sports, drama, and the arts, and take AP classes.
